I don’t know about you, but before I started to become successful in my life, I really loved getting help from other people. I loved all the sympathy I received because I was so “helpless.” I loved the compassionate support, both emotional and financial.

I mean I really loved it!

It was so easy.

During my time in L.A., I got a ton of this kind of support from my family. When they would hear about how bad things were going for me there, the financial and emotional support came pouring in. It felt really good.

Same thing when I moved back home.

If anything good seemed like it was going to happen to me, I was quick to nip it in the bud. I ignored opportunities for a second job to help myself get out of debt. I rejected offers of extra work at the job I had at the time. And I certainly avoided starting any healthy, successful relationships with anyone.

So what was going to happen if I actually started to make good money, became a better problem solver, and was able to take care of myself? Would anyone pay attention to me anymore?

This was pure fear of success at it’s finest (or ugliest!) Little did I know, the success I was avoiding was the very thing my supportive family was trying to help me attain. Once I looked inside myself and realized that they weren’t going anywhere no matter what happened, success or failure, I stopped seeking constant help from them. I didn’t want that kind of attention anymore.

Another breakthrough in my journey past my fear of success.

Until next time,

-Kevin

People with a fear of success are often weary of the attention they'll receive once they succeed. Take action to overcome your fear of people, and you'll remove this block from your path.

If you are a fairly private person or you aren’t used to people giving you much attention, you’ll have to adjust a little bit once you gain some success. This happens not only because people will be looking to you for advice and leadership, but they will also be watching what you do in order to follow your techniques. All of a sudden, you’ve become a role model.

A lot of people with a fear of success are afraid of getting this new attention and having to deal with many more people than they come into contact with in their current situation.

The first step in getting over this hurdle is to embrace the love! Realize that people are paying attention to you because you’ve been doing great things. That’s something to be extremely proud of. With your acquired knowledge and skills, you’ll be able to help countless others in their quest for success, and that will be a great feeling.

If you’re shy, get out there and mingle in order to prepare for the attention you’ll receive. Try taking a class, attending a seminar in your field, or even going to a singles event. Anything that will get you around other people so you can get used to it.

Don’t let a fear of people block your path to success. Often, those people will hoist you to even greater heights!
